New Summer Reading List

This weblog is intended to be a practice exercise in EDM 510.

Norma Medlin

At the end of every year our English  department gets together to discuss what books to choose for our summer reading assignments.  We usually try to have a list of four books per grade level.  Two of these should be considered a classic and then a choice of two other books on grade level.  I would love to have suggestions of what you think students in high school would enjoy reading during the summer.

  1. I Think this will be good for the summer reading.
Classic: 1. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Brandbury
    2. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Two other books for grade 12: 1. The Hunger games by Suzanne Collins
    2. Divergent by Veronica Roth

  2. I really enjoyed To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, in high school and as an adult. Also since The Great Gatsby movie just came out they might enjoy that one as well (by F.Scott Fitzgerald). I also loved The Book Thief by Zusak Marcus and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams and think high school students would too.

    1. I would love to do To Kill a Mockingbird but the 9th grade usually does that one in class. If you ever get the chance go see the play in Monroeville. It was a great experience! The Book Thief is also a favorite of mine and I haven't even seen the movie yet.

  3. I would suggest (in addition to the great choices mentioned above) the following four books as a high school summer reading list:
    1. The Color Purple by Alice Walker
    2. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
    accompanied by
    3. Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys
    4. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
I've read all of these novels and think they would serve as excellent springboards for classroom discussions and activities.

  4. When I was in high school my favorite books from summer reading were Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann Burns, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. These were great books, but it has been many years since I have been in high school. I asked my daughter about some of her favorite summer reading books because I have been out of touch with young adult literature for a while. Her favorites from her required reading were The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom, and Tears of a Tiger by Sharon M. Draper. I have not read any of these books, but they would represent a more current selection. She also does not much read much for pleasure so if she enjoyed these books they may appeal to your most reluctant readers.
